I miss it I whisper to no one in particular. Such obvious statements have no purpose other than to hear my own voice quake with heavy truth. And so I write to piece myself back together once again, introducing myself back to the sense of wonder I thought I'd left at the base of a volcano, repainting the walls of my imagination that've faded in the light of too many brilliant sunsets.
It's a strange stream of sensations loaned to a person through travel, almost as though memories become more vivid than reality, and you're left grappling with a world you should recognize but you still feel unfamiliar.
Eventually small keepsakes become fantom limbs, physical connections to something you never wholly left, tactiles that ground you here and yet anchor your mind and heart elsewhere.
It begs the question how can you ever be fully present again? After you've tasted the forbidden fruit, doesn't part of you live there forever?
Maybe travel is the closest we can ever get to immortality, breaking ourselves apart when we allow ourselves to be truly seen in a new place, where we can't afford to not open our hearts. Where we risk it all for experience, and in return, we gain it all 10 fold, including a little bit more of ourselves each and every time.
